Abandoned vessels pose a significant threat to the NOAA Trust resources through physical destruction of coral habitats and dispersion of toxic chemicals and gear. The Damage Assessment Center (DAC) is addressing this issue by creating a comprehensive database of abandoned vessels. These vessels can potentially threaten coral ecosystems in U.S. waters. Current databases are limited in their scope or definition of abandoned vessels. The inventory is a compilation of existing data from sources such as NOAA, the U.S. Coast Guard, States, Territories and the maritime industry, as well as original data from maps and personal interviews with local sources. Purpose: The Abandoned Vessel Project's purpose is to locate and identify abandoned vessels that threaten coral ecosystems in U.S. waters, assess the threat and seek removal if warranted. This is part of a national effort to map abandoned vessels that may impact coral and associated habitats (seagrass and mangroves) Supplemental_Information: These reports do not represent all AVP data in the region. They represent sites that have enough supporting information to rate as high, medium or low priorities for vessel removal. Vessels with too little supporting information or those that have already been removed are not included. The data in the Oahu, Hawaii inventory are not complete. Significant field validation is required. These data were generated through a number of steps. We started by culling several other databases for records that pertain to grounded sunk and abandoned vessels. These records made our base record set in 2001. From that point forward, we have been working to add and improve the core data set through a number of efforts. We collect information from our website, from the media, from direct interviews and through field surveys. All of these data are used to categorize and prioritize individual records. Many vessels have been assigned a removal priority from high to low depending on a number of factors including threats to public safety, the environment, navigation and aesthetics. Other vesselss, with very little information, are not prioritized until we develop better data. The primary data sources are the US Coast Guard's Abandoned Vessel Inventory System and Marine Safety Management System, NOAA's Automated Wreck and Obstruction Information System and Florida's Derelict Vessel Removal Grant Program.
