- Abstract:
-
The NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) regional satellite Coral Disease Outbreak Risk monitoring product estimates the potential for infectious disease outbreak in the upcoming summer season for selected regions. The Coral Disease Outbreak Risk is currently an experimental product that is still in a research and development phase; it is produced at 50-km spatial resolution twice-weekly in near-real-time for the Great Barrier Reef and Hawaiian archipelago regions. The product was initially implemented in September 2009 and continues to provide updated monitoring information twice-weekly. This metadata file provides information on the product for both the most recent near-real-time updates and the archived and retrospectively processed product, dating back to the 2001 summer season, for the region indicated in the title above. The Coral Disease Outbreak Risk product comprises a metric of variables developed by CRW, including Winter Cold Snap, Winter Conditions, Seasonal Outlook, Summer Hot Snap, and Current Summer Outbreak Risk. These metrics are derived from CRW's operational sea surface temperature (SST) data generated from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on NOAA's operational Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POES). The Winter Cold Snap metric accumulates anomalously cold temperatures through time, as compared with the usual range of winter temperatures, providing an indication of unusually cold events. Such events reflect a reduction in disease pathogen loading during extreme cold periods. The Winter Conditions metric accumulates temperature anomalies during the cold season as compared with the average temperature observed in the three coldest months ("winter") at each location. It represents the variation of the current cold season from the average condition. Mild winters (i.e., neither cool nor warm) have been linked to subsequent outbreaks of White Syndrome disease; research has shown that such outbreaks have not occurred following cool or warm winters, likely related to a reduction in disease pathogen abundance and an increase in host resistance, respectively. The Seasonal Outlook is based solely on the two described cold season metrics; it gives a measure of the pre-disposition to disease outbreak during the following warm season. Only locations that experience mild Winter Conditions are considered to be at-risk, with the likelihood defined by the presence/absence of unusual Cold Snaps. The Seasonal Outlook value is issued at the end of the cold season and provides a 3-6 month forecast of the likelihood of disease outbreak. The Summer Hot Snap metric accumulates anomalously hot temperatures through time, as compared with the usual range of summer temperatures, providing an indication of unusually hot events. This metric represents the level of hot stress that corals experience. The Current Summer Outbreak Risk is assigned only for locations that are deemed at-risk in the Seasonal Outlook and is defined by the level of Hot Snap experienced during the subsequent warm period. Outbreak Risk in the yellow-to-red range indicates that there is a significant likelihood of coral disease, increasing linearly with the color scale. The Outbreak Risk is updated in near-real-time during the warm season on Monday and Thursday. This product, its detailed description, and available data formats and delivery mechanisms are accessible at <http://coralreefwatch.noaa.gov/satellite>, along with general CRW product information and access to other CRW products. Note that the product is available publicly only for the Great Barrier Reef region. It also is available for the Hawaiian archipelago but only to collaborators and interested parties, as validation is presently occurring.
- Purpose:
-
The NOAA Coral Reef Watch Coral Disease Outbreak Risk monitoring product was developed primarily for monitoring and assessment of coral disease outbreak. It serves as a decision support tool to provide critical and timely coral reef environment information to the U.S. and international coral reef communities.

The accuracy of the Coral Disease Outbreak Risk metrics depends on the accuracy of the SSTs used for deriving the product. Preliminary analysis of Coral Disease Outbreak Risk metrics has demonstrated initial success in denoting disease outbreak events. Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellite (POES) AVHRR-SST values that the Disease Outbreak Risk is based on are accurate to within 0.5 degrees C and adjusted by in-situ information (buoys) to best-approximate SST at a depth of 1 meter. However, to provide a complete global coverage, estimation of SSTs at all pixels that are cloud covered may occasionally reduce the accuracy of SST at these pixels. Selected references:

There is no spatial data gap existing in this data set. Because this is currently an experimental product undergoing research and development, revisions to the product are anticipated. When a revision is needed, the whole product time series (both current and archived product) will be reprocessed to replace the existing product time series. The near-real-time disease monitoring product will be updated continuously twice-weekly and added into past data collections once a year.
