- Abstract:
-
These web-posted charts show NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW)'s satellite sea surface temperature
(SST) time series and coral bleaching Degree Heating Weeks (DHW) time series at a representative
satellite pixel location for Scott Reef coral reefs. In each chart, the corresponding
thermal condition related to coral bleaching is color-coded based on a CRW standard and plotted
below the time series. The time series were extracted from CRW's twice-weekly near-real-time 50 km
satellite global nighttime AVHRR SSTs and SST derived DHWs. DHW product is one of CRW's near-real-time
satellite coral bleaching monitoring products. DHW, in units of degree Celsius-weeks, are the
accumulation of bleaching HotSpot anomalies during the previous 12 weeks whenever the SST equals or
exceeds the coral bleaching threshold SST at the pixel. Bleaching HotSpots are SST anomalies
exceeding the maximum monthly mean SST (shorten as MMMSST). The MMMSST is the maximum of twelve
monthly mean SST climatology values, and the Coral Bleaching Threshold SST is defined as the MMMSST
plus one degree Celsius. The MMMSST is location-specific. The time series cover a time period from
Dec 2000 through the most recent twice-weekly time period up to near-real-time. Satellite data from
the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on NOAA's Polar Orbiting Environmental
Satellite (POES) are used to generate AVHRR SST. The near-real-time global SST data and bleaching
DHW data and the time series charts for Scott Reef coral reefs are produced twice-weekly on
every Tuesday (using AVHRR data from the previous Saturday through Monday) and on every Saturday
(using AVHRR data from the previous Tuesday through Friday).
- Purpose:
-
The SST and DHW time series at selected locations, including Scott Reef, were
primarily developed for NOAA's Coral Reef Watch (CRW) from satellite data for both monitoring and
assessment of coral bleaching. CRW's Other coral bleaching monitoring and assessment products
include the SST anomalies, coral bleaching HotSpots, Degree Heating Weeks, Tropical Coral Bleaching
Indices.

Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellite (POES)
AVHRR-SST values are accurate to within 0.5 degrees C and adjusted by
in-situ information (buoys) to best-approximate SST at a depth of 1
meter. However, to provide a complete global coverage, estimation of
SSTs at all pixels that are cloud covered may occasionally reduce the
accuracy of SST at these pixels. The accuracy of the DHW depends
on both SST and the SST climatology used for deriving DHW. No estimation
on the accuracy of DHW has been done yet.

Raw or Level 0, 1a, or 1b data from satellite
sensors is processed to the product level and mapped. The SST and DHW time
series are extracted from the global SST and DHW datasets at the geographic
location of the satellite observations nearest the selected reef site and
then visualized in the time series charts. The following references may be
helpful to describe the data processing for the corresponding products.
