These data were generated through a number of steps. We started by culling several other databases for records that pertain to grounded sunk and abandoned vessels. These records made our base record set in 2001. From that point forward, we have been working to add and improve the core data set through a number of efforts. We collect information from our website, from the media, from direct interviews and through field surveys. All of these data are used to categorize and prioritize individual records. Many vessels have been assigned a removal priority from high to low depending on a number of factors including threats to public safety, the environment, navigation and aesthetics. Other vesselss, with very little information, are not prioritized until we develop better data.
The primary data sources are the US Coast Guard's Abandoned Vessel Inventory System and Marine Safety Management System, NOAA's Automated Wreck and Obstruction Information System and Florida's Derelict Vessel Removal Grant Program.
