Frequently anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title:
GIS Map of Mosaiced LandSat 7 ETM+ Satellite Imagery of the Republic of Palau (NODC Accession 0067475)
Abstract:
This map shows for the first time an accurate georeferenced mosaic of the Republic of Palau and corresponding shallow water areas. Shallow-water (generally, less than 30 meters) bank and land areas in the Republic of Palau were identified through analysis of Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite imagery. The mosaic is laid over ETOPO2 Bathymetric Data to provide an enhanced understanding of how the Atolls and Islands fit together. In addition selected islands and atolls are shown next to the mosaic. This project was conducted in support of the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force.
Supplemental_Information:

Why was the data set created?

The National Ocean Service is conducting research to digitally map biotic resources and coordinate a long-term monitoring program that can detect and predict change in U.S. coral reefs, and their associated habitats and biological communities. This project was conducted in support of the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force (<http://coralreef.gov>).

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

    NOAA/NOS/Landsat Mosaic (source 1 of 1)
U.S. Geological Survey, Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS) Data Center, 2003, GIS Map of Mosaiced LandSat 7 ETM+ Satellite Imagery of the Republic of Palau: U.S. Geological Survey, EROS Data Center, Sioux Falls, SD.

Type_of_Source_Media: Landsat satellite imagery on CD-ROM
    Source_Contribution:
Moderate-resolution Landsat satellite imagery was analyzed to produce maps of shallow-water banks in the Republic of Palau.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 2003 (process 1 of 1)
Using the visible shallow water extent as a guide, each of the georectified shallow water areas and atolls were clipped from the Landsat ETM+ imagery and then mosaiced together. The observation dates of LandSat imagery used ranged from 1999 through 2003.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

All of the imagery is horizontally positioned to less than one Landsat multispectral pixel (28.5 meters). Spatial data meets or exceeds national map accuracy standards for fixed features.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

    none reported

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Landsat imagery over deep water has been removed.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Multispectral Landsat satellite imagery was positioned using National Geodetic Survey ground control data or Landsat satellite ephemeris data.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?

Access_Constraints: none
Use_Constraints: These maps are NOT to be used for navigation.
