GIS Map of Mosaiced LandSat 7 ETM+ Satellite Imagery of the Marshall Islands (NODC Accession 0067475)
Abstract:
This map shows for the first time an accurate georeferenced mosaic of the Marshall Islands and corresponding shallow water areas. Shallow-water (generally, less than 30 meters) bank and land areas in the Marshall Islands were identified through analysis of Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite imagery. The mosaic is laid over ETOPO2 Bathymetric Data to provide an enhanced understanding of how the Atolls and Islands fit together. In addition selected islands and atolls are shown next to the mosaic. This project was conducted in support of the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force.

Why was the data set created?

The National Ocean Service is conducting research to digitally map biotic resources and coordinate a long-term monitoring program that can detect and predict change in U.S. coral reefs, and their associated habitats and biological communities. This project was conducted in support of the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force (<http://coralreef.gov>).

    Using the visible shallow water extent as a guide, each of the georectified shallow water areas and atolls were clipped from the Landsat ETM+ imagery and then mosaiced together. The observation dates of LandSat imagery used ranged from 1999 through 2003.
